Note
UKMTO’s Warning 150-26, issued on Sunday, Oct 4, says the master of a tanker reported being struck by an unknown projectile within the Strait of Hormuz, causing damage to the engine room. The crew were reported safe and no environmental impact was reported. Authorities are investigating. The warning lists the report date and time as TBC and does not name the ship.
It follows two Attack warnings on Friday: 148-26, a tanker on an outbound transit hit by a projectile that started a small fire and caused a blackout, and 149-26, a crude oil tanker struck on the port side 4 nautical miles east of Oman. None of the three warnings says who fired.
The same day, Iran’s parliament speaker and top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the strait will not open until Iran’s seven conditions based on the Islamabad memorandum are met, according to the state-linked agency Nournews as carried by Al Jazeera and Reuters. He said Washington had made “some proposals through a mediator” and that Iran would “both fight and negotiate.” Reuters reports that the US replied last week, through Qatari intermediaries, to Iran’s proposal to reopen the strait within seven days if its conditions were met.
Why it matters
Three tankers hit in three days, none named, and the country that controls access says the strait stays shut until its terms are met. Attacks and talks are moving at the same time.
