Russia hits Ukraine’s grid with its largest energy strike since spring — Trypilska plant damaged
Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi says Russia has moved to massive strikes on Ukraine’s energy system: overnight into Wednesday, missiles and drones hit energy facilities in Kyiv, the Kyiv region and other regions — 11 regions in all — in the largest combined attack since the end of the last heating season, and state-owned Centrenergo says generating equipment at the Trypilska thermal power plant was damaged.
Key facts
- Scale (Koretskyi, Telegram)
- “Such a massive and combined attack has occurred for the first time since the end of the last heating season.”
- Reach
- 11 regions attacked since Tuesday evening — energy facilities plus residential buildings, social infrastructure, civilian enterprises and railways (Koretskyi)
- Casualties (Koretskyi, morning count)
- “As of this minute, 14 casualties are known across the country. Unfortunately, five people have died, including a child.” BBC’s later carry cites local authorities for higher totals — the board holds the official PM line
- Kyiv (BBC)
- Mayor Vitali Klitschko: three killed in the capital, including a utility worker · city under thick, acrid smoke · Kyiv regional head: a child found under the rubble of a house
- Trypilska (Centrenergo, via Interfax-Ukraine)
- Generating equipment damaged; repairs to start “as soon as the security situation allows”; no further detail for security reasons
- Russian claim (attributed)
- Russian defence ministry says it launched massive overnight strikes and names Trypilska — the largest supplier of electricity to Kyiv, per BBC — among targets
- Grid (BBC)
- DTEK: power restored to 8,000 homes after “a difficult night” · energy ministry: households in the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions without power · Ukrenergo asked residents to avoid powerful appliances 10:00–16:00
- Other regions (Zelensky, via BBC)
- Strikes on critical infrastructure in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad and Rivne regions
- Order (Koretskyi)
- Local authorities told to check backup power at critical facilities and finish installation and hookup work
- Live later
- Ukrenergo outage schedules · Trypilska damage assessment · updated official casualty count → conflict HUD — no invented toll
Since the summer, there has effectively not been a single day without enemy attacks on our energy infrastructure.

Note
Ukraine’s winter grid campaign opened early. Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi wrote on Telegram that Russian missiles and drones struck energy facilities in Kyiv, the Kyiv region and elsewhere overnight into Wednesday, and that while there has barely been a day without attacks on the energy system since the summer, a mass combined strike of this scale had not happened since the end of the last heating season. Eleven regions were hit, he said, including residential buildings, social infrastructure, civilian enterprises and railways. His morning count: 14 casualties known, five dead, including a child.
State-owned Centrenergo said generating equipment at the Trypilska thermal power plant, about 40 kilometres from Kyiv, was damaged and that repairs would start once security allowed; Russia’s defence ministry named the plant as a target. The BBC reports Kyiv under thick, acrid smoke, three dead in the capital according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, DTEK restoring power to 8,000 homes, and Ukrenergo asking residents to hold off on heavy appliances through the afternoon. Koretskyi ordered local authorities to check backup power at critical facilities. Outage schedules and any updated official toll go to the HUD.
Why it matters
The heating season has not started and the grid war already has. Eleven regions, the plant that feeds Kyiv damaged, a capital waking under acrid smoke, and the prime minister ordering backup power checks. The official count is the floor, not the story’s end.
