Note
The rain came back on September 24. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority says at least 34 people have died since then, 15 were injured and 11 are missing, with landslides behind 23 of the deaths, spokeswoman Shanti Mahat told dpa on Wednesday. Roads and bridges on the Annapurna Circuit were damaged, hundreds of trekkers turned back or were flown out of Manang and Mustang, and about 700 more are waiting in Pokhara for the circuit to reopen.
On Sunday an avalanche buried the base camp of Himlung Himal, a 7,126-metre peak near the Tibet border, where 16 Nepali workers were preparing the route for foreign climbers. By Thursday evening the mountain guides association had recovered 15 bodies, eight of them that day; one worker is still missing. The authority’s national count was given before those recoveries. Nepal is still digging out from August’s floods, which killed more than 1,400 people.
Why it matters
A month after floods that killed more than 1,400, the rain is back and killing again, and the start of the autumn climbing season has cost 15 mountain workers in one avalanche, with one still under the snow.
