Note

Emergency services were called to Ballymullen Barracks, an International Protection Accommodation Services centre in Tralee, County Kerry, shortly after 5:20 AM local time on Saturday, RTÉ reports. A man was found with serious injuries and was pronounced dead a short time later.

A second man, in his 40s, was taken to University Hospital Kerry with injuries gardaí said are not believed to be life threatening. A man in his late 40s was arrested at the scene and is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows questioning for up to 24 hours.

The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified, a senior investigating officer appointed and an incident room set up at Tralee Garda Station, RTÉ reports. The Department of Justice called it a "critical incident" and said it could not comment further while the investigation is under way.

Why it matters

Gardaí have opened an incident room and the State Pathologist has been notified; no one has been charged, and the investigation is at an early stage.
