Note
A Renfe AVE high speed train running from Madrid to Seville crashed into a stopped Iryo train between Los Yébenes and Urda, in Spain's province of Toledo, on the morning of Oct 28, Renfe said.
The Castilla-La Mancha regional government has confirmed at least 68 deaths, AP reports, and 58 people are being treated in hospital. Regional president Emiliano García-Page told Cadena SER that at least 24 of the dead were on the AVE and 44 on the Iryo train, and that he expects the toll to rise as rescuers reach deeper into the wreckage.
The cause has not been confirmed. Transport Minister Óscar Puente said a computer fault took down a signalling system and stopped trains on the line, and that the control centre then let them resume despite a red signal, RTVE reports.
Renfe says high speed traffic between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia is suspended. Its line for victims and families is 900 10 10 20.
Why it matters
A rear collision on a line built so that it could not happen points past the drivers to the systems meant to keep trains apart.
