Note

Europe's benchmark gas price has crossed €100 per megawatt hour for the first time since 2022. The front month Dutch TTF contract traded at €100.37 at 16:00 CET on Oct 28, up over 4% on the day, Euronews reports, a level last seen in December 2022. Reuters, citing Intercontinental Exchange data, said it briefly touched €100 at around 1335 GMT.

Hours earlier in Brussels, EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said: "Once again, due to geopolitical turbulence, Europe faces another energy crisis." He said fuel bills in the EU were skyrocketing and that this winter would be difficult for citizens and the economy.

Reuters says disruption to Middle East shipping of liquefied natural gas is keeping supply tight as Europe enters the heating season with storage nearly 75% full and Germany's at around 60%. AGSI data cited by franceinfo put EU storage at 74.93% on Oct 27, against 82.91% a year earlier, and Germany's at 61.65%.

The price stood at about €32 before the Iran war began in late February, Euronews reports, and remains well below its record of about €340 in August 2022.

Why it matters

Gas sets the price of power in Europe's hardest hours, so a gas price this high reaches every bill, every factory and every cold room before spring.
