Note

An Italian CH-47 Chinook helicopter serving with the European Union force in Bosnia and Herzegovina crashed on Thursday in Gorice, near the town of Brčko, during routine training, EUFOR said. Four EUFOR personnel were killed and 11 were injured. EUFOR said the injured are in stable condition.

A spokesman for the hospital in Brčko told Euronews that three of the 15 people aboard died in the crash and a fourth died in hospital. EUFOR said no civilians were injured and no civilian property was damaged.

EUFOR said it has opened a thorough investigation into the cause and asked the public not to speculate about the identities of the dead. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offered condolences. The mission, about 1,200 strong, has operated in Bosnia under a UN Security Council mandate since 2004.

Why it matters

EUFOR is a force of about 1,200 that has kept the peace in Bosnia since 2004, and this is a heavy loss for a quiet mission.
