Note

North Korea fired about 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Thursday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The missiles were launched from the Wonsan area on the North's east coast at around 12:30 PM local time and flew about 250 km. Yonhap and Japanese media describe the salvo as about a dozen missiles.

Japan's Ministry of Defense said North Korea launched what may have been ballistic missiles at about 12:36 PM. It said they are believed to have fallen near the east coast of the Korean Peninsula, outside Japan's exclusive economic zone, and that there were no reports of damage to aircraft or ships. Prime Minister Takaichi ordered officials to gather information and ensure the safety of aircraft and vessels.

It is the North's first ballistic launch since Oct 12, when some missiles flew more than 900 km, according to the JCS. Yonhap reports it came six days after Seoul proposed military talks to prevent accidental clashes along the border. Further analysis of the missiles is under way in Seoul and Washington.

Why it matters

It is a mass launch, not a single test, and it came six days after Seoul offered military talks along a tense border.
