Note
At least 15 people, including five children, died in a series of drone strikes that hit a camp for displaced civilians in Ethiopia's Amhara region, two sources involved in a rescue operation told Reuters on Friday. A community representative said 13 people were buried at the camp, known as Jari 2, which is home to more than 1,700 people. Two of the injured later died at a hospital in Hayk, a town 17 km away.
A local official said 36 injured people were receiving treatment. A relative of one victim told Reuters a drone circled overhead on Wednesday, returned on Thursday and hit the camp three times. All three sources said there was no fighting in the area at the time, though members of the Amhara Fano National Movement had been nearby.
It is not clear who was behind the strikes. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Government troops have pushed back a rebel alliance led by fighters from Tigray since its offensive began on September 23, Reuters reports.
Why it matters
The strikes hit civilians who had already fled, in a war that Reuters notes could pull in neighbours across the Horn of Africa.
