Note

Mayon Volcano in Albay had a moderately explosive eruption on Friday that began at 11:53 AM local time and lasted nearly six minutes, PHIVOLCS said. A gray plume rose about 3,000 meters above the crater and drifted west southwest.

PHIVOLCS raised the alert from Level 2 to Level 3 and said Mayon had entered a new phase of magmatic eruption, with increased chances of lava flows and pyroclastic density currents, known locally as uson, on the upper to middle slopes in the coming days to weeks. It recommended evacuating the 6 km Permanent Danger Zone and warned of ashfall in Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan and nearby towns.

The eruption comes less than three months after PHIVOLCS lowered the alert to Level 2 in August, Philstar reports. Tabaco City ordered a mandatory evacuation and classes were suspended in affected areas, GMA News reports.

Why it matters

PHIVOLCS warns of lava flows and pyroclastic density currents on the upper to middle slopes within days to weeks.
