India Meteorological Department, Press Release 6 on Arnab, Oct 28

Note

Cyclone Arnab has crossed India's east coast. India's weather office says the very severe cyclonic storm came ashore on the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts near 16.45N 81.90E, about 20 km east northeast of Narsapur and 40 km southwest of Yanam, between 0200 and 0800 IST on Oct 28, with winds of 125 to 135 km/h gusting to 150 km/h.

In National Bulletin 27, issued for 1430 IST, the India Meteorological Department said Arnab had weakened to a severe cyclonic storm near 16.8N 81.8E, 40 km west northwest of Yanam and 50 km west southwest of Kakinada, with winds of 85 to 95 km/h gusting to 105 km/h. It expects the storm to weaken to a cyclonic storm this evening and to a deep depression tonight as it moves north northwest.

Two surge figures applied at landfall. IMD forecast 1.5 to 2.5 m above the astronomical tide for low lying areas of Andhra Pradesh, with the peak near Kakinada and Yanam, and a separate, higher 2 to 3.5 m along the Godavari river mouth. Its latest bulletin lowers the warning to about 1.0 m for three hours, then 0.5 to 1.0 m.

At least three people have died, officials said, according to AP. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, writing to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, reported no loss of life but damage to crops on about 70,900 hectares and to about 180 houses, Hindustan Times reports.

IMD still warns of heavy to very heavy rain over coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha on Oct 28.

Why it matters

The worst of the wind has passed, but a weakening cyclone still carries the rain inland, and the rivers it feeds rise after the storm is gone.
