Note

A fire ignited in the training area of Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta, at about 4 PM local time on Saturday, October 17, and spread rapidly beyond its boundaries, National Defence said. Four Canadian Armed Forces members were killed: Sgt Morgan Wong, and Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding and Hayden Lykkemark, all serving with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said 39 people were in hospital, at least 19 of them critical. Maj Gen Wade Rutland said officials had believed the grass fire was contained before the wind shifted and drove it about a kilometre in 36 seconds toward soldiers in live-fire training.

Prime Minister Mark Carney called it one of the worst tragedies for the Forces on Canadian soil in peacetime and ordered flags on federal buildings to half-mast. The cause is under investigation, and the military says there is no indication of terrorism.

They were training for the worst a battlefield could do. The wind did it first.

Why it matters

A fire the base thought was contained turned on a company of soldiers in under a minute, in a week of wind driven fires across North America.
