Note
Taiwan's Central Weather Administration says Typhoon Champi's storm circle now covers Taiwan and Matsu. In sea and land typhoon warning report No. 16, issued at 8:30 PM Taiwan time on Friday, October 23, it said the storm continues to pose a threat to Taiwan, Penghu and Matsu.
At 8 PM local time the agency placed the center at 24.9N 122.7E, about 100 km east of Yilan, moving north northeast at 16 km/h. It rates Champi a moderate typhoon, with a central pressure of 945 hPa, sustained winds near the center of 43 m/s, about 155 km/h, and gusts of 53 m/s, about 191 km/h.
The track is the worry. The agency says the center may deflect slightly or loop in the coming hours. Its forecast puts the center at 27.5N 123.1E by 8 PM Saturday, about 330 km north northeast of Yilan.
Champi is wide. The agency gives an average radius of 320 km for winds of 15 m/s or more, and 120 km for winds of 25 m/s or more. Its strong wind advisory is at orange for most of the island on Friday, including Keelung, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Yilan, Hualien and Taitung, and orange areas remain through Saturday night.
Yesterday the warning reached the land. Today the storm did.
Why it matters
A typhoon that slows or loops near a coast keeps its wind and rain over the same ground for longer. Champi's winds of 15 m/s or more reach about 320 km from its center on average, so the whole island sits inside it.
