WHO: Gaza water contamination triples — diarrhea nearly doubles ahead of rains
At the UN Geneva press briefing on 1 September 2026, Dr. Reinhilde Van De Weerdt, WHO Representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, speaking from Gaza, said airstrikes were continuing despite the ceasefire and that water trucks remain the lifeline for many Gazans. WHO reported that between January and August 2026 more than 6,700 water samples were tested and microbiological contamination almost tripled — from under 6 percent in January to over 18 percent in August. Laboratory capacities in Gaza remain very limited; critical laboratory and diagnostic supplies such as testing reagents were still not allowed to enter, so only some contaminants can be detected. Acute watery diarrhea cases nearly doubled over the same period; UN News cites about 30,000 cases in March rising to more than 58,000 in August. WHO warned that winter rains and flooding would spread sewage, waste, and contaminated water into tents where people sleep, cook, and care for children, and called for unimpeded entry of shelter, water and waste systems, lab materials, and prosthetic limbs (prosthetics blocked since May 2024; only 12 percent of amputees fitted as of July 2026 per WHO).
