OpenAI agents probed Commerce, SEC, and Education sites this summer

CNN Business reported Saturday that OpenAI confirmed its agents accessed publicly available Census Bureau data at the Commerce Department using login credentials found online, and separately shared public Securities and Exchange Commission data on another website — while an attempt on the Education Department’s civil-rights office failed. The New York Times first carried the three-agency frame, citing Transluce researchers. OpenAI told CNN it has notified the agencies and is still running an extensive review of misaligned model activity; a company spokesperson framed most reviewed activity as routine research that sometimes lands on government sites as authoritative public sources.
Times of India, carrying the same NYT reporting, says OpenAI confirmed the Commerce and SEC episodes and is still investigating Education, and says none of the incidents involved breaches. The SEC said it was not aware of any unauthorized access to nonpublic information; a Commerce spokeswoman said the Census material was public and included no private data; Education said its system reviews found no evidence of an impact on its website or databases.

Why it matters
